Background of the Study
Urbanization is rapidly transforming the cultural landscape of Eti-Osa, leading to significant shifts in indigenous identity and self-perception. As modern infrastructure and lifestyles proliferate, traditional values and cultural practices face erosion (Akinyemi, 2023). Many indigenous residents struggle to maintain a sense of cultural continuity while adapting to urban pressures, resulting in identity conflicts and altered self-perception (Balogun, 2024). Urban environments often promote a homogenized culture that may marginalize indigenous customs, leading to feelings of alienation and loss of cultural pride (Folorunsho, 2025). This study examines how rapid urbanization affects the cultural identity of indigenous populations in Eti-Osa, exploring the interplay between traditional practices and modern influences. The research aims to uncover the challenges and opportunities inherent in this transition and to propose strategies that support the preservation of indigenous identity in an increasingly urbanized setting.
Statement of the Problem
In Eti-Osa, urbanization has introduced significant cultural changes that challenge the preservation of indigenous identity. The influx of modern values and lifestyles has led to a gradual erosion of traditional practices, resulting in altered self-perception among indigenous residents. This cultural displacement has raised concerns regarding the loss of heritage and identity, contributing to feelings of alienation. Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical research on the impact of urbanization on indigenous identity. This study aims to address this gap by examining the effects of urban growth on cultural self-perception (Akinyemi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of urbanization on indigenous identity in Eti-Osa.
To examine changes in self-perception among indigenous residents.
To recommend strategies for cultural preservation amid urban growth.
Research Questions:
How does urbanization affect indigenous identity in Eti-Osa?
What changes in self-perception are observed among indigenous residents?
What measures can support the preservation of indigenous culture?
Research Hypotheses:
Urbanization negatively impacts indigenous identity.
Changes in urban lifestyles alter self-perception among indigenous communities.
Cultural preservation strategies can mitigate identity erosion.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the effects of urbanization on indigenous identity and self-perception, offering insights into cultural preservation strategies. The findings will be invaluable for policymakers and community leaders striving to balance modernization with the retention of cultural heritage in Eti-Osa (Balogun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
